DIETARY GUIDELINES FOR DIABETIC PEOPLE
- Maintain body weight in the desired range as it could help in better sugar level control.
- Say "No" to sugar, honey and jaggery and their products like jams, sweets etc.
- Intake of cereals must be adequate not excess. whole grains like ragi, wheat, unpolished rice are preferred over refine products like maida, sago, semolina etc.
- wide variety of pulses and legumes can be consumed to meet the protein requirement.
- Underground vegetables like potato, carrot, beetroot must be restricted.
- High calorie fruits like banana, pomegranate, mango, grapes, custard apple, wood apple, jackfruits must be avoided.
- Fruits like apple, orange, gauava, sweetlime, watermelon, muskmelon, papaya can be consumed regularly. One fruit serving per day( 75- 100 g).
- Non veg consumption should be limited to 1-2 times a week. Chicken( skinned out), fish and egg white are healthier options.
- Skimmed milk can be used instead of whole milk.
- Refined oil usage is advisable(sunflower, vegetable oil).
- Dietary fiber helps in controlling blood sugar level. Important sources are greens, whole grains, pulses, vegetable and fruits with edible skin.
- Limit salt intake as diabetics are prone to hypertension.
- Meal timings and distribution are important to suit insulin or hypoglycemic drug regime.
- Dry fruits like raisins, dates fig should be avoided. Nuts like cashew nuts, almond, walnuts can be consumed occasionally.
- Alcohol is better avoided, if consumed occasionally only.
